Colyton Grammar School’s Under 16 girl’s Hockey team recently put in an outstanding performance at the East Devon Hockey Competition, securing victory after a thrilling series of matches. We are now East Devon Champions! The team have benefited from training on the new astro surface at school over the last 2 years, made possible by your donations.
An account of the championship game by the PE teacher follows:
'Colyton started their campaign strongly with a commanding 3-0 win over Uffculme. The girls quickly settled into their rhythm, keeping possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match. Their teamwork and fluid passing game allowed them to dominate the play, with goals from Ellie J and Srasta B. In the second game of the tournament, Kings defeated Uffculme 3-1, meaning that the final match of the day, Colyton versus Kings, would determine of the overall winner of the competition.
The final match was a thrilling contest, with both teams playing with intensity and purpose. It was a tense first half, with both sides working hard in defence and creating fast counterattacks. Neither team could break the deadlock, and at halftime, the score remained 0-0. After the break, Colyton found another gear, showing clinical precision in their attacking play. The defence, led by some solid contributions from the backline, pushed the ball forward, and the midfielders, including the ever-impressive Alice S, made excellent runs into the attacking third. Their pressure eventually paid off when Ellie J scored a superb goal, slotting the ball past the Kings’ goalkeeper to give Colyton a 1-0 lead.
Despite Kings efforts to find an equaliser, Colyton held firm in defence and saw the game out to secure a hard-earned 1-0 victory. Ellie J was deservedly named Player of the Tournament for her all-round performance. The girls demonstrated exceptional teamwork, determination, and resilience throughout the competition. Their tactical awareness, combined with individual brilliance, earned them the well-deserved title of champions. Congratulations to everyone involved on a fantastic term of hockey. '
